Travellers headed to Vancouver International Airport (YVR) should expect more delays and check their flight status before leaving.
YVR is reporting more widespread delays on Wednesday, April 16, as Nav Canada (Canada’s air navigation service provider) resource constraints continue to impact air travel.
In a news release, YVR stated that it does "not know when Nav Canada's resource constraints will be addressed" and customers may continue to experience changes to their flights, including delays and cancellations. These changes may affect flights connecting through the airport.
YVR advises travellers headed to the airport to "check the latest flight status" directly with their airline and contact their airline for rebooking options, if needed.
FlightAware's online flight tracker indicates YVR is experiencing departure delays of "an average of 32 minutes (and increasing)" and "inbound flights delayed at their origin an average of 2 hours 38 minutes."
According to YVR's departures page, 32 flights departing on Wednesday, starting in the morning and through the evening, are delayed. However, the airport doesn't specify the reason for each delay. In addition, 16 flights are cancelled.
According to YVR's arrivals page, an eye-watering 75 flights departing on Wednesday are delayed and 17 are cancelled.
In a post on X/Twitter shared Wednesday, Nav Canada Operations stated that delays continue affecting "some flights in YVR due to Nav Canada resource constraints." It noted that its team is continuing to move aircraft as safely and quickly as possible. This was the same message the department posted on Tuesday.
Nav Canada spokesperson Maryam Amini told V.I.A. that a temporary Traffic Management Initiative (TMI) was implemented at YVR again on Wedensday (there was also one on Tuesday) due to "resource constraints related to unplanned absences." She added that the Nav Canada team was working to minimize impacts from the TMI.
"One of the tools used to safely manage airport demand is the implementation of a Traffic Management Initiative. While we strive to minimize their use, TMIs help maintain a safe flow of traffic and ensure the quantity of aircraft in a given airspace or airport remains manageable," she said.
Amini added that Nav Canada is conducting "extensive recruitment campaigns," as well as "enhanced workforce scheduling, hiring experienced air traffic controllers, and leveraging temporary assignments – in addition to very competitive remuneration."
Guest Experience team members stationed at YVR's Information Counters and throughout the terminal can help travellers connect with their airline.
V.I.A. has reached out to Nav Canada for further comment and will update the story.
