The Chase Sapphire Preferred^® Card can reimburse you for trip delay expenses related to missed flights, but only for qualifying delays. It doesn’t cover flights missed due to short delays or personal reasons (like running late) and is generally limited to covering meals, lodging, and necessities as you wait out a travel delay.
Here’s what you need to know about using Chase Sapphire Preferred card benefits to get reimbursed for expenses related to travel delays from missed flights.

The Chase Sapphire Preferred^® card is one of the best travel rewards cards on the market. Its bonus categories include travel, dining, online grocery purchases, and streaming services, which gives you the opportunity to earn lots of bonus points on these purchases.
Additionally, it offers flexible point redemption options, no foreign transaction fees, and excellent travel insurance coverage including primary car rental insurance. With benefits like these, it’s easy to see why this card is an excellent choice for any traveler.
Chase Ultimate Rewards
If you miss a flight, it’s possible to get trip delay reimbursement from your Chase Sapphire Preferred card. However, it’s not automatic, and you have to qualify for the benefit with a travel delay of at least 12 hours — or overnight. There’s no specific missed flight coverage, though trip delay costs are covered.
For example, if you have a connecting flight and your first flight is delayed, it could cause you to miss your connecting flight. If the next flight isn’t available for 12+ hours or you have to wait overnight, you could file a claim for reasonable expenses while waiting for your rescheduled flight.

The Chase Sapphire Preferred card’s trip delay benefit offers up to $500 per person for unexpected expenses while waiting on a delayed flight. These include hotel accommodations, meals, and necessary items such as toiletries and medication.
Chase Sapphire Preferred card trip delay coverage applies to the cardholder, their spouse or domestic partner, and dependent children under 26.
To be eligible, you must pay for some or all of the ticket costs with your Chase Sapphire Preferred card or have redeemed Chase Ultimate Rewards points.
Severe weather, mechanical issues, strikes, or hijacking/skyjacking are covered trip delay reasons. Missing a flight due to short delays of less than 12 hours or personal reasons such as oversleeping are not covered.

The Chase Sapphire Preferred card’s trip delay benefit covers lodging, meals, and essential items, but it doesn’t cover everything. For example, it won’t cover rebooking fees for missed flights — you’ll have to take those up with the airline. It also doesn’t apply to prepaid, nonrefundable activities such as tours or event tickets, so you can’t get reimbursed if a travel delay causes you to miss travel plans.
The Chase Sapphire Preferred card’s trip delay benefits apply worldwide if you purchase your ticket using the card or with Chase Ultimate Rewards points. Just be sure to work out currency conversions and get proof of the delay from the airline.
No, missed connections due to short layovers don’t qualify for trip delay benefits with the Chase Sapphire Preferred card. If you book a flight with a short layover and miss your connection because there wasn’t enough time, the Chase Sapphire Preferred card trip delay benefit won’t apply. However, the airline may be responsible for rebooking you in this situation.
Airlines will generally rebook you on the next available flight, but they’re not always required to cover hotels and meals. The airline may provide hotel accommodations and meals if you miss a connection due to an airline-caused delay, such as mechanical issues or operational problems. However, if a missed connection is due to weather, airlines are generally not required to provide hotels. This is a situation in which trip delay coverage would be helpful.
If your flight is delayed and you might miss a connection, speak with the airline first. The airline may offer you a hotel voucher or meal credit, saving you from fronting expenses. But if the airline doesn’t help, you should keep your receipts and proof of delay to file a trip delay claim.
Chase Sapphire Preferred card trip delay benefits offer reimbursement for reasonable expenses, but unreasonable expenses won’t be reimbursed. For example, staying at a midrange hotel near the airport would be reasonable, but you shouldn’t expect to be fully reimbursed for a night at a luxury resort. Likewise, extravagant dining, such as a steakhouse, might be questioned.
You can file a trip delay claim by contacting the claims administrator within 60 days of the delay. You’ll need to verify your card benefits and provide necessary documents, such as proof of the airline’s delay, your Chase Sapphire Preferred card statement showing you paid for the flight with the card, and receipts for covered expenses.
