United Airlines has taken a transformative step for both its operations and the travel and tourism sector by breaking ground on a massive new $177 million Ground Service Equipment (GSE) Maintenance Facility and officially opening a state-of-the-art Technical Operations Training Center (TTC) at George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH). These investments, part of a broader $3.5 billion commitment to upgrade United’s Houston hub since 2015, signal a future-focused strategy to support global aviation growth, workforce readiness, and a seamless travel experience for passengers flying into and out of Texas.

IAH Expansion Tied to Growing Passenger Demand and Tourism Growth

The infrastructure upgrades come in anticipation of Houston’s Terminal B Transformation Project, designed to accommodate 36 million annual passengers and set for completion in 2026. With over 500 daily departures and more than 14,000 local employees, United’s expanded presence at IAH reaffirms Houston’s status as a top-tier international travel gateway, vital for both domestic and inbound tourism.

The Terminal B redevelopment will include 40 gates for larger aircraft, increase international travel capacity, and feature the largest United ClubSM lounge in the airline’s global network. With Houston emerging as a business and leisure travel magnet, these expansions are expected to strengthen the airport’s competitive edge and boost tourism-driven economic activity across the region.

United’s $177M Ground Service Equipment Facility to Open by 2027

Slated to open in 2027, the 140,000-square-foot GSE Maintenance Facility will support more than 1,800 ground service vehicles, serving as a critical hub for maintaining the equipment that ensures safe and timely departures. United’s 130+ strong GSE team will have access to:

A 25% increase in repair space
A 60% increase in shop space
An 80% increase in storage capacity
A 50% increase in shared operational spaces

The new facility is targeted for LEED Silver certification, aligning with the airline’s commitment to sustainability. It will also support the largest fleet of electric ground service equipment (eGSE) in the airline’s network, helping to lower maintenance needs and reduce emissions at IAH—further positioning Houston as a green aviation leader.

Technical Operations Training Center: Preparing a Future-Ready Workforce

Simultaneously, United has officially opened its new $16 million, 91,000-square-foot Technical Operations Training Center (TTC), a cornerstone of its investment in upskilling aviation technicians. The TTC provides hands-on, real-world training on aircraft maintenance and safety, including:

Scenario-based engine maintenance
Boeing 737 and 787 troubleshooting simulators
Sheet metal and composite repair shops
Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) and borescope inspection labs

Additionally, the TTC features a $6.3 million Move Team Facility, centralizing the management of 15 Super Tugs—specialized vehicles that relocate aircraft across IAH’s vast airfield. This ensures greater efficiency in repositioning flights for departures, maintenance, and gate access, directly enhancing on-time performance for travelers.

Boosting Travel Infrastructure and Economic Activity in Houston

Beyond operations, United’s investments are set to supercharge Houston’s tourism economy. In 2023 alone, United hired over 2,100 people locally and added another 600 new positions in 2024, with projections pointing to 4,000 new construction jobs created during the facility buildouts. A Compass Lexecon study estimates that United’s direct employment in Houston contributes over $1.2 billion annually to the city’s economy.
These improvements align with United’s broader United Next strategy, which includes the delivery of over 500 new narrow-body aircraft, a 30% increase in available seats per domestic departure, and substantial reductions in carbon emissions per seat—all central to accommodating rising air travel demand while supporting environmental goals.
