CHEYENNE, Wyo. — Black ice and subzero windchills are the primary threats facing southeast Wyoming travelers today as a secondary weather system settles over the region.
While meteorologists with the National Weather Service in Cheyenne expect minimal daytime snow accumulation in the valleys, plunging temperatures have already triggered black ice warnings on Interstate 25 and forced travel restrictions on secondary routes like Wyoming Highway 211.
The NWS in Cheyenne is warning of a 70% chance of snow through mid-afternoon. While lower elevations along Interstate 80 are expected to see less than an inch of accumulation, mountain areas could receive between 3 and 5 inches of new snow.
Temperatures are expected to reach a high of 23 degrees, but windchill values will remain between minus 5 and 5 degrees throughout the day. North winds will increase to between 5 and 15 mph this evening, dropping windchill values to as low as minus 10 overnight.
Road conditions have worsened due to freezing temperatures and precipitation. The Wyoming Department of Transportation reported black ice on I-25 between Cheyenne and Whitaker Road at 6:20 a.m. today. WYO 211 is currently limited by a 13-foot width restriction between Yellowstone Road and Jordan Road due to slick surfaces and blowing snow. Maintenance crews also reported drifted snow in the area.
Slick spots and slush are impacting several other routes, including U.S. Highway 85 and WYO 210. I-25 remains slick through Chugwater, Wheatland and Glendo, with black ice advisories extending as far north as Casper.
Meteorologists expect a reprieve starting Saturday with sunny skies and a high near 39 degrees. However, another high-wind event is predicted to begin Tuesday and continue through Thursday.
More on the weather is available from the NWS in Cheyenne.
