Another Night of Slippery Travel Ahead for Tonight, with Unsettled Weather Expected Throughout the Week – WAGM

PRESQUE ISLE, Maine (WAGM) – Good evening everyone and happy Monday. We had a beautiful start to the day today with sunshine early on in the day. Cloud cover quickly filled in during the morning hours, followed by snow showers arriving early this afternoon. Snow showers were slow to begin depending on where you were in the county today, with northern areas lacking in terms of activity all day long. Southern areas have seen the steadiest of snow showers for a longer period of time, resulting in a coating of accumulation already in many communities over southern Aroostook. Snow continues tonight as the area of low pressure responsible for the activity moves overhead. This means accumulating snow is likely county wide before the night is over, with the highest accumulation amounts expected over southern Aroostook county.
Going hour by hour through the rest of tonight shows steady snow continuing to work over the region as the evening goes on. By midnight tonight, snow showers will become more scattered in nature, with activity continuing to taper off going into the early morning hours of Tuesday. Low temperatures tonight remain mild given snowfall expected across the county. Lows will likely fall back into the upper 20s, meaning a heavy, wet, and slippery snow is expected as the night goes on. Easterly winds continue to be gusty at times during the early evening, with winds lightening up as the night goes on.
Snowfall amounts will range with this system. The highest amounts are still expected over southern Aroostook county, where some communities close in on half a foot of snow once things are all said and done. Snowfall amounts lessen traveling north, with places through central Aroostook county looking at closer to half a foot of snow likely. The St. John Valley will likely see the lightest amounts from this storm, with a couple of inches possible before sunrise tomorrow morning.
Tomorrow still looks to be an unsettled day, even with some breaks in the clouds and sunshine early on. Any sunshine that we see tomorrow will further add to instability, and result in popup showers during the afternoon hours. The latest computer model runs show warmer temperatures building back in for the afternoon hours tomorrow, meaning any showers that we see, at least early in the afternoon, will be in the form of rain. Showers changeover to snow as the afternoon changes into evening, meaning more slippery travel is possible tomorrow night. High temperatures tomorrow will be mild once again, with highs reaching the upper 30s and lower 40s. Southwesterly winds will be light during the day tomorrow, but will be the main influence bringing warmer air into the region.
