SAN DIEGO — People looking to catch a train ride will have more options with more round trips added to the Amtrak Pacific Surfliner between Los Angeles and San Diego.
“It’s currently ten round trips a day, and this will add three additional. So it will be 13 between Los Angeles and San Diego,” LOOSAN Rail Corridor Agency Deputy Managing Director Chris Orlando said.
A $27 million grant from the Federal Railroad Administration to the LOSSAN Rail Corridor Agency will fund the three daily round trips, increasing its train frequencies from 10 to 13.
“The objective here is to get our train service frequencies, the service levels back up to what they used to be, prior to the COVID pandemic really,” Orlando said.
The two round trips will be implemented on the Amtrak Pacific Surfliner schedule in March, with the third coming in November.
“With these additional trains, we’ll get close to hourly service in the peak times. So that’s great,” Orlando said.
CBS 8 spoke to Sebastian Magnarelli at the Old Town Transit Center as his son waited to board the train to Los Angeles.
“Great news. Sometimes we’re a little restricted on the visitations because of the routes on the weekends. They don’t have the same frequencies than during the week, he studies during the week, so it’s good news for us,” Magnarelli said.
