Many popular destinations, including Lisbon, Porto and Setúbal, are affected by the alerts, while the district of Bragança and the archipelagos of Madeira and the Azores are exempt from the orange warnings.
The orange alert is mainly due to rough seas, affecting the districts of Porto, Setúbal, Viana do Castelo, Lisbon, Leiria, Aveiro, Coimbra and Braga.
The warning for the affected coastal districts comes into effect between 9 pm on Wednesday and 9am on Thursday, when west to north‑west swells are expected with a significant height of 5 to 6 metres.
However, the weather agency warns that waves may reach a maximum height of 9 metres.
