United Airlines will be the only U.S. carrier with service to Greenland when it starts its flights on June 14 – coincidentally, President Donald Trump‘s birthday, who has made the U.S.-Greenland relationship a central focus of his administration.
United’s seasonal flights will be the most direct way for Americans to visit the island, and could provide a boost to the territory’s tourism sector, which has seen a bump already recently from the renewed political attention and the opening of a new airport.
If you’re considering a trip to Greenland, here’s what you need to know about getting there.
United Airlines will fly twice weekly to Greenland’s Nuuk Airport from Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey.
The flights will depart Newark on Saturdays and Tuesdays at 11:30 a.m. local time and arrive in Greenland at 6:45 p.m. local time. The return flights are scheduled to depart at 9 a.m. on Sundays or 9:10 a.m. on Wednesdays and arrive in Newark four and a half hours later.
United will operate the flights with a Boeing 737 Max 8.
Basic economy fares are currently available for around $1,500 per person round-trip for most of the summer departures.
Americans looking to fly to Greenland can also use Icelandair or Air Greenland via Reykjavik.
