The U.S. State Department issued an updated travel advisory to this popular Caribbean destination due to crime and other factors.
The State Department reissued a “Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution” advisory to the Bahamas due to several factors, including violent crime, swimming risks and firearm warnings.
“Most crime occurs in Nassau and Freeport on New Providence and Grand Bahama islands,” the advisory states, especially in areas where there is gang violence.
The advisory also warns travelers to be alert at all times on vacation rental properties where private security is not always present.
Not only did the State Department warn travelers about crime, but also it issued a safety warning to swimmers.
“Never swim alone and beware of jet skis or other watercraft operating close to shore,” the advisory states. “Be aware of your surroundings and stay alert in public restrooms.”
The update also includes a section on firearms and ammunition in the Bahamas.
It echoes a recent travel warning made for U.S. travelers to the Turks and Caicos islands that those who bring firearms or ammunition to the island risk being detained due to laws that prevent firearms and ammunition from entering the island.
For those who do decide to travel to the Bahamas, keep these things in mind:
