Those looking to catch a flight from Macon will soon have new options, allowing passengers to access other destinations after a direct flight from Middle Georgia.
The Macon Regional Airport and Contour Airlines will soon offer direct flights to a new destination.
Contour Airlines announced Thursday the launch of a new, nonstop service from Macon-Bibb to Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) in Virginia, beginning May 1.

A press release for the announcement stated Contour has plans to operate daily flights utilizing a 30-seat Embraer ERJ-135 aircraft, which boasts all leather seating with expanded legroom, complimentary snacks, and beverages, as well as one free checked bag included with every fare.
Macon Regional Airport manager Doug Faour said the change would include dropping flights from Macon to Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI). However, the transition to IAD could offer more travel options for passengers looking to travel elsewhere.
"Contour Airlines has been flying to Baltimore for the last several years. They will continue to fly twelve roundtrips a week, but instead of going to Baltimore, they will go to Dulles," Faour said while speaking with WGXA News on Thursday before breaking down the flights per day. "Typically, two flights a day, except on Saturdays, will be one flight; sometimes on Tuesday, it will be one flight; and sometimes, on Wednesdays, it will be one flight."
The switch to Dulles would allow greater access to United Airlines' connecting flights because of an agreement between Contour and United, which has a hub at IAD.

“This change not only opens connections for Macon travelers, it creates a new audience of visitors to Middle Georgia from across the country,” the press release quoted Gary Wheat, President & CEO of Visit Macon. “We now have the opportunity for a broader reach in our marketing efforts in showcasing our community as a premier destination.”
