Delta Returns Full Operations After Southeast Weather Impact – Travel And Tour World

Delta has resumed normal operations in Atlanta and the Southeast after winter storms disrupted travel, ensuring passengers receive support and flexibility for changes.

Delta Airlines has restored normal operations in Atlanta and across the Southeast following disruptions caused by winter weather over the weekend. Teams worked tirelessly to minimize cancellations and provide care for customers during the weather challenges. Efforts remain ongoing to assist travelers whose plans were impacted by the storm.

Customer Support Updates

As part of its commitment to passenger safety, Delta has extended its restriction on unaccompanied minors traveling through Atlanta until Monday. In addition, Delta waived checked baggage fees for customers flying on Delta-operated flights up until 11:59 p.m. local time on Saturday. This policy does not apply to flights departing from Amsterdam (AMS), which are managed by Delta’s partner, KLM. Passengers who paid for checked baggage between Friday, January 10, and Saturday, January 11, can expect refunds for these fees to be processed in the coming days.
A travel waiver is still available for affected cities in the Southeast, including Atlanta, providing flexibility for customers to modify or cancel their travel plans.

Flight Changes, Rebooking, and Refund Options

Delta is committed to offering options for customers whose flights were delayed or canceled:

  • Rebooking Options: Customers can manage rebookings through the Fly Delta app or the My Trips section on delta.com.
  • Domestic Refunds: Travelers on U.S. domestic flights who face delays of three hours or more and choose not to travel—on either the delayed flight or an alternative rebooked itinerary—are entitled to a full refund for the unflown portion of their ticket, including baggage fees and other charges.
  • International Refunds: For international travelers, delays of six hours or more provide the same refund eligibility if they decide not to fly.

Automatic Refunds for Cancellations

If a flight is canceled and the traveler opts not to fly on the rebooked itinerary, Delta will automatically process a full refund for the unused portion of the ticket after a 24-hour waiting period. Customers who do not receive automatic rebooking should contact Delta promptly through airport representatives, the Reservations team, or the Fly Delta app’s Message Us feature to explore alternative travel options.
Under the Department of Transportation’s automatic refund guidelines, Delta will also initiate refunds for the unused portion of tickets if rebooking is not feasible and customers do not reach out to arrange alternative flights.
Delta remains committed to assisting all impacted travelers and ensuring they receive the support needed to reach their destinations safely and efficiently.
