TDM AWARDS – NOMINATE NOW!
As summer holidays approach, UK pet owners are facing new challenges due to updated EU travel regulations. Ceva Animal Health, a leading animal health company, has released a vet-approved checklist to assist pet owners in navigating these changes. Dr Sarah Endersby, Global Technical Manager Behaviour at Ceva, emphasises the importance of early preparation for a safe and enjoyable journey with pets.
With nearly 80% of Europeans planning vacations and over half of UK households owning pets, travelling with animals is increasingly common. The checklist advises scheduling a vet visit to ensure vaccinations are current and tailored to the destination. It also highlights the need to verify entry requirements and update pet microchip information.
Key travel tips include avoiding feeding pets before departure to prevent motion sickness, ensuring pets are hydrated, and using comfortable carriers. For longer journeys, frequent stops for exercise and interaction are recommended. The new EU regulations limit the number of pets per vehicle to five and require rabies vaccinations, antibody testing, and updated health certificates.
Upon arrival, pet owners should allow their pets to adjust to the new environment and maintain regular routines. The EU’s enhanced regulations, effective from October 2026, aim to improve health and safety for pets travelling within and into the EU. Pet owners are encouraged to consult official guidelines to ensure compliance and a hassle-free journey
