BUFFALO, N.Y. — Great Lakes cruise travel is making a return to Western New York as passengers aboard an American Cruise Lines voyage arrived in Buffalo on Thursday following a nine-day journey across New York State.
The cruise began in Syracuse and included several stops along the state’s waterways before docking in Buffalo, giving travelers the opportunity to experience communities across the region.

Passengers onboard said the trip offered a different pace and atmosphere compared to other destinations they’ve visited.
“I wanted to check out this area of the country because we’ve been to the southern cruises,” one traveler said. “Next month we want to go to the Columbia Snake River cruise, so just different areas I wanted to check out.”
Another passenger visiting from California praised the welcoming environment in Western New York.
“I come from California and that’s hurry, stand in line and wait,” the traveler said. “Here you didn’t have to do that and I appreciate it. It was more like country, nice sweet people.”
Local leaders say the cruise industry’s return could be a major boost for Buffalo’s waterfront and tourism economy.
Construction on a new, larger cruise terminal at the Outer Harbor is expected to begin this summer as the city works to attract more cruise operators and visitors in the coming years.
“The City of Buffalo did a wonderful job of helping us find a temporary location for 2026 and possibly next year,” one local tourism official said. “Our new terminal in the Outer Harbor is being designed, and we worked with a number of the cruise lines to make sure that we can receive them at any level.”
According to Visit Buffalo Niagara, seven cruise ships are expected to stop in Western New York this year, potentially generating around $1 million for the local economy.
Tourism leaders also say ongoing development projects at Canalside and the Outer Harbor are helping reshape Buffalo’s image as a waterfront destination.
“With all the new infrastructure taking place at Canalside as well as the Outer Harbor, creating this really welcoming place with our waterfront, a lot of people don’t realize that Buffalo is a waterfront city,” a Visit Buffalo Niagara representative said. “I think this really proves it now.”
