As sky-high gas prices push more Californians to rethink costly travel plans, summer staycations are expected to surge. Thankfully, new rankings of the top travel destinations suggest you won’t have to leave the state to find the perfect getaway.
On May 12, WalletHub released its list of “Best Summer Travel Destinations (2026)” and 10 California metros made the top 100:
San Diego ranked first in the state and third nationwide for “low costs and fewest hassles.” Los Angeles took a hit on the financials, ranking highest for travel costs.
San Diego also ranked highest statewide for activities. The region is home to Legoland, Sea World, two major zoos, Belmont Park, and numerous beaches.
