Caribbean cruise travellers lag on CFAR cover amid rising disruption risks – itij.com

Caribbean cruise travellers are lagging behind other regions in purchasing cancel-for-any-reason (CFAR) cover, despite rising global uncertainty and recent travel disruptions.
New data from US travel insurance marketplace Squaremouth shows CFAR uptake for Caribbean cruises has increased by just 10%, compared with nearly 30% growth for destinations such as the US and Mexico. This leaves many travellers exposed to risks not typically covered by standard policies, including airspace closures, hurricanes, and geopolitical events.
The findings come as demand for flexible insurance grows, with CFAR interest rising 27% in 2026 amid global disruption.
Squaremouth sales data indicates most Caribbean cruise customers continue to opt for standard cover and are booking closer to departure, with average booking windows shrinking from 90 to 82 days. In contrast, travellers purchasing CFAR are booking earlier, securing cover around seven months in advance.
Higher-value trips are also driving uptake, with the average cost of CFAR-protected holidays rising, while standard policy trip values have declined.
Chrissy Valdez, Senior Director of Operations at Squaremouth, said: “Recent world events have made flexible travel insurance benefits such as CFAR increasingly important for travellers. However, despite this trend, our data shows that Caribbean cruisers have a much lower adoption rate of CFAR and interruption-for-any-reason (IFAR) coverage.”
