Travelling to Italy in April or May 2026? Public holidays and planned industrial action overlap. Flights, trains, metros and even the link to Sicily can be temporarily unreliable. This article covers only what you need as a traveller: which dates, what may be affected, and how to protect your plans and your rights.

In spring 2026, strikes coincide with Easter, 25 April and 1 May. Critical flight days are 10 April and especially 11 May (air traffic control). On the ground: among others 11 April (rail maintenance), 13 April (Naples and train catering), 24 April (Milan ATM/NET), 17 April (Messina crossing). Holy Week is legally often the calmest window for transport. For flight disruption caused by ATC: no fixed EU compensation, but care duties apply; check fasce di tutela for trains.

In April and May, Easter, 25 April (Liberation Day) and 1 May (public holiday) fall close together. Transport and services are often busy already. On top of that, targeted strikes are scheduled. They can hit flights, trains, metros, buses and ferries. Some windows have wide ripple effects, not just one city.

14–18 April: haulage strike in Sicily – heavier road traffic and port areas; taxis, tours and transfers may take longer.
1 May: general strike (including USI-CIT). Aviation and rail are often partly exempt, but museums, shops, ticket offices and some services may be closed or limited. Check opening times for what you plan to visit.
Easter week (periodo di franchigia): Italian law restricts transport strikes in that week. It tends to be the most predictable period for nationwide travel by public transport or plane this spring – still align your trip with the actual Easter dates for 2026.
