LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) – If you’re heading to the skies for Christmas travel, you’re not alone. AAA predicts more than 122-million Americans will be flying now through Jan. 4.
At Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport, travelers are taking the busy stretch in stride.
Louisville resident Melanie Baker got to SDF more than three hours early Monday morning for her flight to Iceland. Now, she’s going over her check list of must-sees.
“I really want to see the Northern Lights, I hope that the skies are clear so that will show up, ” Baker said.
SDF spokespersons say she has the right idea. They advise domestic travelers arrive two hours before departure, for internationally travel, at least three.
SDF says that Dec. 21 through Jan. 4 is their busiest times of year. More than 104,000 ticketed passengers are expected to fly in and out during the end-of-the-year holiday period.
TSA has provided suggestions to ease your way through the security checkpoint process: first, all liquids have to be 3.4 ounces or less for carry-on. Anything larger needs to be checked. Also, put gifts inside bags so agents can screen them.
And don’t wrap presents that may have to be then unwrapped for checking.
“I’m totally comfortable traveling by air, it’s more dangerous to travel on the interstates than it is in the air, in my opinion,” added Michael Mee as he prepared for his flight from Louisville to Texas Monday.
SDF is offering additional travel tips to help out. Security checkpoints at SDF open 90 minutes before the first daily flight, and close at 9 p.m. You can reserve a space in the Express Shuttle Lot for $5 a day to guarantee a parking spot.
Make sure you have a REAL ID, U.S. passport, or other acceptable identification ready when you arrive at the terminal to expedite the check-in process.
