Travel agents for Under The Sun Travel in Owasso, Ashley Prater and Lindsay Wileman, are offering advice to Americans with upcoming trips to Mexico. They say knowing your options before you leave can make a big difference.
Where should travelers look for the latest updates?
“Travel.gov will give all of their current updates and travel advisories. The embassy also gives daily updates right now,” said Prater.
Official government sources should be the first stop for travelers concerned about changing conditions.
What should travelers check with their airlines?
“If you look on your airline website, there’s generally a banner and it will tell you if there’s any travel waivers in place for your date to travel,” said Prater.
She adds that those waivers can provide flexibility.
“So, just kind of look in there and that gives you the options on if you want to rearrange your travel and they will let you know if you can do that free of cost at this time.”
What about travel insurance?
“We use Allianz Travel Protection in many instances,” said Prater. “Most of the tour operators that you would use offer their own, which is kind of nice because those offer the cancel for any reason policy.”
She notes that added protection is widely available.
“Every cruise line, every airline, they’re all going to offer some kind of a protection that you can buy in addition to cover your trip.”
Is there a way to receive alerts while traveling?
“You can pre-enroll in the STEP program (https://mytravel.state.gov/s/step), and that’s what’s going to give you all of the email updates prior to travel as well as during travel,” said Prater. “If there is any alerts that happen, if there’s any civil unrest, anything that would be going on that might affect you while you’re in destination.”
The U.S. State Department’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program also serves another purpose.
“In addition, it works as an emergency contact. So, if the State Department or the embassy needed to get in contact with you while you’re in another country, that would allow them to have a contact information to reach you.”
Who should travelers contact if they’re concerned about their trip?
“Travelers should always reach out to who they booked through,” said Wileman. “Whether that’s a travel advisor or an online tour operator, or through the airline or hotel.”
Both agents say communication is key if travelers are unsure about whether to proceed with plans.
What safety tips should travelers take while on vacation?
“Always use a reputable company, a reputable transportation company, somebody that you know and trust, somebody that’s been recommended to you,” said Prater. “And then also using good common sense. I mean, anywhere that you’re traveling, not just out of the country, but even within the country.”
She says preparation also includes knowing who to call if something goes wrong.
“Our clients have a number that they can reach us 24 hours a day. So, in addition, we give them 100 other numbers that they can call in case they have any problems while traveling. And we give a recommendation of tips and tricks that they can use while they’re traveling if they ever do run into any issues.”
Ashley and Lindsay add that if you have questions during your trip, you should reach out directly to whoever handled your booking.
