12:57 p.m. – Gov. Stein gave an update on the state’s response to the winter storm.
“We are working around the clock to clear roads and get people back to their daily lives as quickly and safely as possible, but because temperatures will remain low overnight, this process takes time,” said Governor Josh Stein. “We ask for your patience, and if you need to be on the roads this week, I urge you to slow down, give extra distance, and use caution while traveling.”
Sunshine and above-freezing temperatures will melt snow and ice in some areas, but anything that melts will refreeze after the sun sets.
The governor said nearly 2,500 NCDOT workers are plowing and salting highways and secondary routes. He said crews are making progress on highways and interstates, but dangerous icy spots could remain as temperatures stay low.
Transportation officials are urging people to stay off snow and ice-covered roads and to beware of black ice.
10:00 a.m. – NCDOT spoke gave updates on current conditions as well as best practices during clean-up.
Road conditions across North Carolina continue to improve, with interstates now clear and approximately 75% of roads statewide passable. Conditions remain similar to those seen last week, as extreme cold temperatures continue to limit how quickly crews can make major progress.
NCDOT officials noted that every storm is different, and prolonged cold weather is not typical for North Carolina, requiring crews to adapt their response strategies. This weather event has been easier to manage than the previous storm, as ice poses the greatest risk to road safety, and icing has been less severe.
NCDOT has prioritized treatment of interstates and primary routes, which are largely in good condition. However, ramps and access roads may remain slick, and drivers may encounter a few isolated icy spots on second-tier roads, some possibly lingering from the previous storm.
Motorists are urged to use extra caution, especially on interstates and primary routes, maintain extra following distance, and delay travel if it is not necessary.
