GREENVILLE, S.C. (FOX Carolina) – We have a First Alert Weather Day ahead for treacherous travel conditions and bitter cold.
Just when you think conditions improve, dangerous cold arrives Tuesday. An Extreme Cold Warning covers elevations above 3500′ in the northern mountains, with wind chills plunging to -15 degrees or lower. A Cold Weather Advisory covers the rest of the Western Carolinas as temperatures drop into the single digits with feels like temperatures as low as -15° to -5° for the mountains valleys and 0°-10° in the Upstate. First Alert Weather is warning you now so you can prepare.
What to expect: Temperatures drop into the single digits and near zero across mountain areas Tuesday morning. Gusty northwest winds make it feel even colder.
First Alert tip: Protect yourself and your family. Limit time outdoors, dress in layers, and check on elderly neighbors and those without adequate heat. Bring pets inside and ensure outdoor animals have shelter and unfrozen water. If you have power outages from yesterday’s ice, use generators outside only — never indoors.
This cold pattern sticks around through the end of the week. Highs reach only the 20s to upper 30s in the mountains and upper 30s to low 40s in the Upstate through Friday. Overnight lows drop to the teens and low 20s.
A small chance of snow next weekend emerges if a coastal system develops, but confidence remains low. The models have been showing the storm then taking it away so for now, we are monitoring it. Precipitation looks light so no major totals are expected at this time. However, if snow falls on this brutally cold air mass, roads could become slippery again. The First Alert Weather Team continues to monitor this system.
Stay with First Alert Weather for the latest updates. We track every change to keep you safe. You can count on us to be first to warn and first to know.
