TUCSON, Ariz. (13 News) – Winter storms sweeping across the country continue to disrupt flights at Tucson International Airport, with travelers facing delays and cancellations despite the city’s sunny forecast.
The airport saw 11 flight cancellations on Monday, adding to nearly 80 delays and 40 cancellations over the last three days as winter weather causes chaos.
Ana Guardado has been trying to get back to Dallas for days after two canceled flights.
“I was expecting maybe a delay, but no cancellation,” Guardado said. “They told me there is no way to go back today, maybe tomorrow.”
If her third flight attempt fails, Guardado said she will stay at the airport overnight.
“I will stay here in the airport, on the floor maybe,” she said.
The flight disruptions prompted some travelers from the East Coast to change their plans entirely. Kevin Kuehmeier rerouted his trip, skipping his end destination of Pittsburgh to land in Tucson a day early.
“We were worried about the weather and, of course, all of the snow up that way,” Kuehmeier said. “Happy about the sunshine and warmer weather than Pittsburgh, which is going to be below 20 degrees with a wind chill factor.”
Other travelers found creative solutions when their flights were canceled. Morgan Daub said her brother booked a new flight and had to find alternative transportation when his original one was canceled.
“He had to Uber his way over to Phoenix and fly out of there in order to get back home,” Daub said.
As flights start to resume and the worst of the storm passes, Daub said she hopes stranded travelers like her brother and Guardado can get home.
“I hope, you know, they don’t cancel, so I can go back home,” Guardado said.
The FAA announced that air travel should start to return to normal on Monday. Airport officials also recommend travelers check their flight status ahead of time in case of any disruptions.
