Vance visiting Florida? Why VP may stop in Naples next week – naplesnews.com

Vice President JD Vance, who on Jan. 20 announced his wife Usha’s pregnancy with the couple’s fourth child, could be coming to Naples, Florida next week.
While Vance’s office hasn’t officially announced a Florida visit and his office has not responded to an email, signs point to a potential VP visit to Naples on Jan. 28.
On Jan. 20, a notice for airspace restrictions around Naples Airport was issued for Jan. 28.
Possible reasons for a Vance visit include backing a Florida gubernatorial hopeful and Naples resident endorsed by President Donald Trump and a controversial federal immigration detention center nearby.
Here’s what to know about Vance and the potential Naples visit:
On Jan. 20, Vice President Vance, 41,and second lady Usha Vance, 40, announced they are expecting their fourth child, a boy.
“Usha and the baby are doing well, and we are looking forward to welcoming him in July,” a statement released by the couple said.
It will be the first time the wife of a sitting vice president has a baby.
The Vances already have two sons and one daughter:
According to USA TODAY, Vance’s memoir, “Hillbilly Elegy,” tells the story of a childhood plagued by abuse, alcoholism and poverty. It follows Vance’s white, working-class family from his grandparents in Kentucky’s Appalachia region to his coming-of-age in Middletown, Ohio. Vance also chronicles his time in the Marines and higher education, touching on “generational upward mobility” and carrying “the demons of his chaotic family history.”
Ron Howard directed an adaptation of Vance’s bestselling memoir, which was released in select theaters and on Netflix in November 2020.
The national attention and name recognition Vance gained from the book and movie helped him win his U.S. Senate bid in 2022.
Vance was born James Donald Bowman in Middletown, Ohio. After his parents divorced, his middle name was changed from Donald, his father’s name, to David, USA TODAY reported.
As a teenager, he adopted his stepfather’s surname, Hamel.
To honor his maternal grandmother, Bonnie Blanton Vance, he legally changed his last name in 2013, becoming James Vance.
In 2021, he removed the periods from his initials, a detail noted in his official U.S. Senate biography, which lists his first name as JD.
A Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Safety Team notice issued Tuesday, Jan. 20, says airspace will be restricted around Naples Airport on Wednesday, Jan. 28, for “VIP Movement.”
That notice is reserved for the president and vice president, but the particular airspace restrictions indicate it is Vance.
“We don’t have many details, yet, except for what’s described” in the NOTAM (FAA Notice to Airmen), Naples Airport Authority Executive Director Chris Rozansky told the Naples Daily News. “Because of the nature of the visit, will defer questions to Secret Service when they make contact with us.”
The NOTAM, which is a written notice issued to pilots before a flight advising them of circumstances relating to the state of flying, announced a temporary restriction for the “VIP Movement” within 5 Nautical Miles (NMR) of the Naples Airport, starting from the surface, or ground level, up to 4,999 feet above ground level (AGL). Pilots must avoid this specific cylindrical airspace volume without authorization on Jan. 28.
For the president, the temporary flight restriction, or TFR, is typically 8-10 nautical miles and up to 18,000 feet, according to the National Business Aviation Association.
Air Force Two has a maximum takeoff weight (MTOW) of about 255,000 pounds, according to Joint Base Andrews, located just southeast of Washington, D.C. That’s more than three times the 75,000-pound weight limit for aircraft to operate at the Naples Airport.
Government planes that heavy, including that of former Vice President Mike Pence in 2019, have landed in Naples and are exempt from the airport’s weight limit, Rozansky said.
Vance could stop by to support Byron Donalds, the Republican congressman from Naples running for Florida governor.
Trump has endorsed Donalds, who, at one time, was a contender for the VP position Vance now holds.
Lee County Republican Executive Committee Chair Michael Thompson said he “couldn’t confirm or deny” any details about “what might be a fundraising thing.”
If elected, Donalds would be the first Black governor of Florida.
Donalds is running to replace current Gov. Ron DeSantis, who is ineligible to run again due to term limits.
Alligator Alcatraz, Florida’s federal immigration detention center in the Everglades, is another possible reason for a visit from the sitting vice president.
The facility is located about 60 miles from Naples, in the Big Cypress National Preserve.
Vance has been touting the Trump Administration’s immigration policies. With two immigration detention centers in Florida and a third planned, Vance could make the state an example.
