Hundreds of flights canceled as winter weather continues across the US – USA Today

Strong winter weather is affecting travelers across the U.S. Monday, Dec. 29 as many people continue their post-Christmas journeys.
Snow and high winds have been hitting the Midwest and Great Lakes, while a winter rainstorm is hitting the Northeast and parts of the South.
As of 12:15 p.m. ET on Monday, around 630 flights in the U.S. were canceled, and more than 3,600 others were delayed by at least 15 minutes, according to FlightAware. Delta Air Lines was posting the highest number of affected flights, with 3% of its scheduled services canceled.
Here’s what to know if your flight is impacted.
Travelers whose flights are canceled for any reason are entitled to a full refund if they either decide not to fly or refuse compensation like credits or vouchers, according to the Department of Transportation. If they do continue with their journey, then they’re entitled to penalty-free rebooking.
Since weather is considered outside an airline’s control, travelers aren’t entitled to anything extra if their flight is canceled or delayed, such as a hotel stay.
Travelers can also check the DOT’s consumer dashboard to see what their airline has committed to offering during delays and cancellations.
No major U.S. airlines are currently offering travel waivers, but if your flight is affected you should be offered rebooking options through the carrier.
