Chain controls have been lifted on Interstate 80 in the Sierra after several hours on Friday afternoon, according to Caltrans.
Earlier in the day, slush on the freeway led to multiple spinouts near Donner Summit.
As of 5 p.m., chain controls were lifted for I-80; however, truck drivers must have maximum chains in their possession in order to proceed eastbound from Applegate in Placer County.
At 3:30 p.m., chains were required on all vehicles between Kingvale in Placer County to the Donner Lake Interchange in Nevada County.
On Friday morning, the California Highway Patrol urged drivers to use extra caution following spinouts over Donner Summit. The agency shared a photo of one incident involving a big rig that shut down two lanes of travel.
