In a bid to ease congestion and provide timely updates to commuters and tourists, the Siliguri Metropolitan Police has introduced a new system to broadcast real-time traffic information through FM radio channels.
The initiative aims to help travellers plan or reschedule their journeys to avoid delays and harassment caused by sudden traffic bottlenecks in Siliguri and adjoining areas.

DCP (Traffic) KS Ahmed shared details of the initiative today during a broadcast on a private FM channel. He said that as vehicle population continues to rise rapidly in Siliguri—considered the gateway to the North Eastern states—the existing road infrastructure is often unable to match the growing pressure. Despite this, he assured that traffic movement in the city remains steady, with no reports of complete standstill, although slowdowns are frequent.

According to Mr Ahmed, nearly 700 traffic personnel are currently deployed across the Siliguri Metropolitan Police area to manage traffic and ensure smooth movement throughout the day.
To strengthen public communication, Police Commissioner C Sudhakar has approved a dedicated traffic bulletin that will be aired twice daily on FM radio, including through All India Radio (AIR). As part of this system, an evening bulletin will be broadcast at 9 pm, offering commuters an overview of the expected traffic scenario for the following morning. This will enable residents and tourists to adjust their travel plans in advance.
RJ-led live interactions with the OC Traffic will also be facilitated, allowing radio hosts to obtain and share real-time updates from congested points across the city. Officials believe this will help travellers chart hassle-free routes and reduce uncertainty during peak hours.
The police expect that the new FM-based traffic alert system will significantly improve mobility and public convenience, particularly during the tourist season and festival rush when road pressure in Siliguri typically increases.
