As a primarily solo traveler, I don’t have the luxury of splitting hotels, car rentals, and other travel expenses with anyone, so I’ve become a self-proclaimed black belt when it comes to finding travel deals. Once you spend some time in the industry, it becomes easier to spot them, and you can find some amazingly affordable travel deals if you’re willing to trade your time for saving money.
Thanksgiving is just around the corner, and it’s one of the busiest travel days of the year. Here’s everything you need to know about booking some of the best Thanksgiving travel deals so you can enjoy the kick-off to the holiday season with a few extra bucks in your wallet.
Skyscanner is the ultimate travel hack for Thanksgiving travel. Over the years, I’ve snagged some incredibly cheap flights with Skyscanner, both domestic and international. I’m not alone in my love for Skyscanner—over 160 million travelers use the global travel search engine. Skyscanner doesn’t sell tickets: it does the dirty work for you and shows you all of your travel options from over 1,200 trusted providers, so you can pick the deal that’s right for you. It saves you both time and money, and I’m all about that life. Plus, it doesn’t just aggregate flights… you can search and price compare hotels and rental cars all in one platform.
If you learn nothing else from this article, know this: be flexible. Whether you’re flying for Thanksgiving or road tripping in July, flexibility is key to unlocking savings. The travel industry operates on a basic supply-and-demand setup, which means prices will reflect this.
The day before Thanksgiving is historically one of the most popular times to fly in the United States. If you can fly out earlier in the week, you might be able to find a much cheaper flight. This doesn’t mean that the entire trip will be cheaper (you still need to book lodging), but this drastically changes the entire trip. Would you rather spend $1,000 on a 3-day trip or $1,000 on a 5-day trip to the same destination? The money saved on your flight gets put toward lodging. (Maybe you’ll use the extra cash to upgrade your hotel or splurge on a nice restaurant.)
This travel tip runs parallel to staying flexible, except it gives you a daily overview of prices. This can be helpful if you notice a flight price drop from $139 to $78, depending on whether you’re flying on a Sunday or a Monday. If you’re flexible with your plans, you can take advantage of these travel deals and use them to your advantage.

This works in reverse, too. You’d be surprised at what savings you can unlock by extending (or shortening) your trip by a day. Play around with the monthly calendar search on Skyscanner and see what travel deals you can snag.
Many travel websites, including Skyscanner, give you the option to set price alerts for flights. I love this feature because I can simply enter my home airport, destination, and dates, and let technology handle the fare updates. Hopefully, the fare change is in your favor, but this isn’t always the case. Sometimes the fares will increase, and you have to gamble a bit to decide if you should purchase the flight now or hope that the price drops. I’ve used Skyscanner’s price alert feature to book some incredible international trips in previous years, and it’s nice not to have to monitor the prices manually.

These travel tips apply to flights, rental cars, and even hotel bookings. Skyscanner offers a straightforward, one-stop shop setup, allowing you to shop everything through one site and be confident you’re getting the best deals.
I’m team carry-on only, and I think you should be, too. Oftentimes, cheap flights come with a layover, and every layover increases your odds that your checked bag might not make it on the next flight. Traveling with just a carry-on and a personal item (like a backpack) allows you to travel without the fear that your luggage won’t make the trip. Plus, you save money from not checking a bag. It’s much less stressful, and I promise you, you’re overpacking anyway.
Skyscanner has already begun marking some of the best Thanksgiving travel deals. Here are a few of our favorites for popular U.S. cities:
