HOUSTON — Almost two weeks into the federal government shutdown, many are wondering how a lapse in federal funding will affect airport travel, especially as the holiday season ramps up.
Flight delays and cancellations within, into or out of the U.S. seem to be trending up. Locally, Houston airports are starting to see those numbers rise as well, according to data the Houston Business Journal collected from flight tracker FlightAware.
Since Tuesday, Oct. 7, delays and cancellations across U.S. flights have mostly risen, climbing from 3,849 and 70, respectively, on Oct. 7 to 7,851 delays and 271 cancellations on Oct. 12. It should be noted that severe weather has been impacting travel in the Northeast since Oct. 12.
At Houston’s two largest airports — George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) and William P. Hobby Airport (HOU) — delays and cancellations seem to also be on an upward trend, starting since Friday, Oct. 10.
