Over millions of years, the Lehigh River in Pennsylvania carved out a rugged, steep-walled gorge that is full of thick vegetation and hidden waterfalls. One of the best ways to soak in the natural wonder of this region is by boarding the Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway, a comfortable, vintage coach train that winds into Lehigh Gorge State Park.
The Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway departs from Jim Thorpe, Pennsylvania–a town just 1.5 hours outside of Philadelphia. It was originally known as “Mauch Chunk,” a Lenni Lenape word that means “Bear Mountain,” and it is located in the heart of the Pocono Mountains.
From there, the out-and-back trip follows the Lehigh River over bridges through Glen Onoko and into the Lehigh Gorge State Park. Each journey allows passengers to relax as the train leads them through panoramic views of the mountain vistas and winding river valleys, and you can listen along as guides explain the history of the area.
Many of the passenger cars were built as early as 1917, but they have been updated with modern comforts such as restrooms, plush seating, and heating. There’s also a snack and souvenir car aboard the train in case you forgot to bring snacks or water. For more privacy, be sure to book the private caboose, which can hold up to six passengers.
The Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway is truly at its most spectacular in autumn, when the leaves start to change color and the gorge prepares itself for winter. On these brisk, fall days, the train travels over rivers, across bridges, and through tunnels–passing by viewpoints of the fiery leaves of the maple trees, oak trees, and river birches. Be sure to have your cameras ready for the dramatic cliffs and wildlife sightings.
During the peak season, due to its massive popularity, the train operates differently from other times of the year. For 2025, the autumn leaf schedule will run from Oct. 1 to Nov. 16.
The autumn ride lasts for only 45 minutes rather than 70, while still covering the same ground. Also, during this time, tickets are not sold in advance or online. All ticket sales are conducted in-person at the Jim Thorpe ticket booth on a first-come, first-served basis. They can also only be purchased on the day of the trip. The only exception is for groups of 10 or more who would like to book a weekday trip.
The ticket booth opens at 9 a.m. on weekdays and 7 a.m. on weekends. Autumn ride tickets start at $22 for adults and $9 for children. Check the autumn leaf schedule for more information about times and purchasing options.
