Newport ranked fourth on a new list of the best places to live on the East Coast, according to real estate experts surveyed by Travel + Leisure magazine.
The city was praised for its combination of maritime heritage and natural beauty, according to the article published Monday.
“New Englanders are all about history and the outdoors, and Newport offers both in abundance. The sailing community is known worldwide and reflects the deep and respectful relationship we have to the water,” said Karen Hanson, license partner at Engel & Völkers By the Sea, in the Travel + Leisure piece.
Hanson described Newport as a “physically beautiful place with a magnetic cultural appeal.”
However, the experts noted Newport’s expensive real estate market, particularly for single-family homes. Hanson explained that like many historic smaller-sized cities, there is “limited opportunity for new development, but the demand for a sophisticated, seaside place to live with the best views, food, and entertainment never seems to wane.”
Single-family homes in Newport are averaging over $1 million, according to Hanson, though she noted there are “far more affordable options to experience Newport in condos or rentals.”
Charleston, S.C., topped the list, followed by Alexandria, Va., and Gloucester, Mass. Newport was fourth, ahead of Southampton, N.Y.; Bethesda, Md.; Greenwich, Conn.; Kennebunkport, Maine; Harrison, N.Y.; and Silver Spring, Md.
The rankings were based on factors including walkability, cultural amenities, proximity to major cities and housing options, according to the magazine.
