BUFFALO, N.Y. – Western New Yorkers could face a wet commute Tuesday as thunderstorms roll across Erie County, with slick roads expected on I-90 and I-190. Drivers should plan extra travel time, as heavy rain may reduce visibility during the morning and midday hours.
According to the National Weather Service in Buffalo, storms will develop early Tuesday with a 90% chance of rain and embedded thunderstorms by afternoon. Winds may gust up to 18 mph, and rainfall totals could reach a half inch in some spots. While flooding is not expected, ponding on low-lying roads is possible, especially in the city of Buffalo and Tonawanda.
Tuesday night brings lingering showers before skies clear by Wednesday morning. Sunshine returns midweek, with highs near 70, providing a break from the rain. By Thursday, scattered showers could develop again, though impacts appear limited.
Labor Day weekend travelers can expect calmer conditions. Friday through Sunday looks mostly dry, with daytime highs in the low to mid-70s and cool, comfortable nights in the 50s. Those hitting the road Friday afternoon should find favorable driving conditions, a welcome break ahead of the holiday rush.
Residents are urged to stay weather-aware through Tuesday, as sudden downpours may catch commuters off guard. Any additional advisories could be issued if storm activity increases overnight.
