SEOUL, July 25 (Korea Bizwire)South Korea on Friday raised travel alerts for border regions of Thailand and Cambodia as the armed conflict between the two Southeast Asian countries is escalating over their longstanding territorial dispute.
Beginning at 12 p.m., a “special travel advisory,” which advises nationals to refrain from traveling to or to leave designated areas, was issued for Thailand’s southeastern border regions of Surin, Buri Ram, Si Sa Ket and Ubon Ratchathani, and Cambodia’s northwestern border provinces of Oddar Meanchey and Preah Vihear, the foreign ministry said in a release.
The special advisory will be in effect for 90 days, with possible extensions if needed.
The Level 2 travel warning, which advises against nonessential travel, was applied to three nearby border regions in Thailand and five other provinces in Cambodia.
At least 14 Thais have been killed and dozens of its soldiers and civilians wounded as tensions have flared up anew with exchanges of gunfire, shelling and rocket fire in the long-disputed border areas.
South Korea urged the two nations to peacefully resolve the armed conflict through dialogue.
“The South Korean government expresses deep concern over the armed clash that occurred between Thailand and Cambodia … and extends its condolences and sympathy to the victims and their bereaved families,” ministry spokesperson Lee Jae-woong said in a commentary.
“We urge both Thailand and Cambodia to ease tensions and resolve the situation peacefully through dialogue,” he said.
Thailand and Cambodia have often clashed over their shared land border, a dispute that remains unresolved due to competing territorial claims dating back to the French colonial era.
