HOUSTON — Summer travel is in full swing, but passengers flying out of William P. Hobby Airport, should plan ahead as overnight traffic restrictions are now in effect due to ongoing construction.
Houston Airports has begun building a new covered departures canopy at Hobby Airport as part of a $470 million multi-phase expansion project. The canopy is expected to be completed by summer 2026.
Starting Sunday, July 8, and continuing through Sept. 30, only one curbside lane at the departures level will remain open overnight from 8 p.m. to 4 a.m., Sunday through Friday.
The project is intended to make “the passenger journey more comfortable and efficient,” according to Houston Airports.
“The construction of a new covered departures canopy at William P. Hobby Airport (HOU) is part of a broader effort to modernize and expand airport facilities,” the agency said in a statement.
The new canopy will include a sleek, covered walkway connecting the Red Garage directly to the Ticketing Lobby. Airport officials are urging travelers to plan for potential delays and adjust their drop-off schedules accordingly.
During construction hours, temporary lane closures will be clearly marked. Travelers are encouraged to follow posted signage and directions from airport staff. The Houston Police Department will have an increased presence to assist with traffic flow and ensure safety.
“Attention travelers! A new canopy is coming to the Departures Curb for a better experience,” Houston Airports said in a post on X, formerly Twitter. Passengers are advised to allow extra time for drop-off and check-in during the construction period.
The airport emphasized that the disruption is temporary.
