ATLANTA — More than 4 million people are expected to pass through Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport from Thursday, June 26, through Monday, July 7 as part of the Fourth of July holiday travel period.
Flights are back on track Monday after the busy travel week got off to a rough start, with storms causing hundreds of delays and cancellations.
While Friday’s disruption was significant, the late afternoon and evening storms seem to be quite common this summer. With plenty of summer travel still ahead, 11Alive asked Clint Henderson, a travel expert at The Points Guy, for some tips.
When it comes to cancellations due to weather, Henderson said passengers have very few rights.
“Passengers have very few rights really when it comes down to it, that’s why it’s good to have insurance through a credit card that you book the trip with and also save your receipts, ask for what you need,” Henderson said.

He said if your airline is facing more severe issues than other airlines, still try to get help from them, but if it seems like a never ending wait, Henderson suggests booking with a different airline. He notes the airline is not required to reimburse you.
However, save those receipts — just in case.
When it comes to trying to avoid delays due to weather Henderson has this tips.
“So that’s one of our key pieces of advice at The Points Guy is book the first flight out in the morning,” Henderson said. “No one wants to get up at four in the morning, but it’s so worth it if you can get on that first flight of the day, very much less likely to be impacted by weather, thunderstorms.”
This upcoming Sunday is expected to be the next busiest day at the airport with 377,076 projected passengers, according to airport officials.
