The US State Department has issued an urgent safety alert for India, advising travellers to avoid certain high-risk areas due to increasing security threats. The advisory highlights regions such as Jammu and Kashmir, Maharashtra, Telangana, West Bengal, Manipur, and parts of central and eastern India, where incidents of terrorism, civil unrest and violent crime have been on the rise.
This warning, issued ahead of the summer travel season, urges American citizens to exercise heightened caution and reconsider travel to these vulnerable regions.
The updated travel advisory places India under “Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution”, while also classifying some areas under “Do Not Travel”.
The advisory identifies specific zones where US government personnel are restricted or require special authorisation to visit, due to safety concerns and limited access to emergency services. Among these are eastern Maharashtra, northern Telangana, and western West Bengal, areas which have witnessed incidents such as terrorist attacks, robberies, and sexual violence.
Tourists are warned to remain alert, particularly in crowded public places and popular sightseeing locations.

Particular attention has been drawn to Jammu and Kashmir, especially the Kashmir Valley, where towns like Srinagar, Gulmarg and Pahalgam have seen persistent unrest and threats from militant groups. The State Department noted the ongoing political instability in the region and the high risk of violent clashes, making it unsafe for international visitors. The advisory also applies to parts of central and eastern India where extremist activity has targeted government personnel, law enforcement and paramilitary forces.
In the northeastern region, Manipur has also been marked under “Level 4,” following reports of violence and displacement among local communities. The situation remains tense, with travel deemed unsafe due to the possibility of conflict escalation and lack of access to emergency support.

The advisory stresses that travellers should remain aware of local laws, which in certain areas may restrict the use of GPS devices, satellite phones and other forms of communication. Women travellers have been particularly advised not to travel alone in high-risk zones, as concerns for personal safety remain high.
The US government has emphasised that the safety of its citizens remains a top priority and has provided detailed warnings to help guide travel decisions. The US Embassy in New Delhi is the main point of contact for American citizens in case of emergencies and is closely monitoring the security situation across the country.
While India continues to attract large numbers of international visitors, the advisory serves as a reminder for travellers to stay updated on evolving risks, follow safety protocols, and avoid areas currently facing instability.
