Editor’s note: This is a Friday, 8:15 p.m. update.
Motorists entering and leaving the Florida Keys can now use the 18-Mile Stretch and Card Sound Road.
The main thoroughfare between Key Largo and Florida City was closed to traffic around 4 p.m. due to the ongoing wildfire in south Miami-Dade.
Card Sound Road northbound reopened to traffic at 6 p.m.; the southbound lane opened just after 8 p.m. It’s the first time Card Sound has seen vehicular traffic since the fires shut the road down on Tuesday.
Earlier in the day, the Stretch closed for a brief period following a multi-vehicle crash near MM 121 on the Miami-Dade side. Four individuals were injured from the crash; one pediatric patient was airlifted to a trauma center, according to Miami-Dade Fire Rescue.
As of Friday evening, the Florida Forest Services said the wildfire burned more than 26,000 acres with 50% contained.
