Are you hoping to go on vacation this summer, but aren’t sure you’ll be able to bankroll a trip?
Whether you’re traveling by air, land or sea, there are plenty of ways to save money.
“AAA Northeast’s travel advisors have plenty of ways to save on both big-ticket items and the smaller purchases that can quickly add up,” according to a release.
Here’s what to know.
A report from AAA Northeast states that gas prices are “much lower than this time last year,” but stressed that there are ways to save even further at the pump.
“Once you hit the road, keep in mind the gas stations right off the interstate are usually the most expensive; you can often drive a little bit farther down the road for a better price,” according to a release.
The release continued to explain that fuel economy peaks around 50 mph on most cars, “then drops off as speeds increase.
“Reducing highway speeds by just 5 to 10 mph can increase fuel economy by as much as 14% and extend time between fill-ups.”
AAA Northeast explained in a report that travelers with flexible dates have the best chance of scoring deals on airline tickets.
“Booking flights on Tuesdays and Wednesdays will cut costs as mid-week flights tend to be cheaper,” a release stated.
The AAA Northeast report added that if you’re someone that is not picky about selecting a seat ahead of time, or boarding last, basic economy travel can be a great option for saving some money.
What’s more, packing light for a given trip can save a few bucks because it is generally expensive to check a bag roundtrip, according to AAA Northeast.
When it comes to getting to the airport for your flight, “Getting a ride from family or friends or taking public transportation can save money on airport parking,” a release stated.
Cruises can save travelers some money, as rooms, dining and entertainment are generally included up front.
Homeport cruising, available locally/regionally at the Flynn Cruiseport Terminal Boston, offers cruises with no flights required.
The first thing to consider is the neighborhood you book your hotel in.
“Hotels in prime locations, city centers and tourist areas tend to be more expensive than hotels a bit removed from the action. In major cities, look for hotels within walking distance to public transit to save money on transportation,” the release said.
The report added that those traveling in a group of four or more, may want to consider renting a condo or apartment to be more cost-effective.
“Having a kitchen is a great option for budget-conscious travelers; you can save by making meals and snacks rather than eating out for every meal,” AAA Northeast said.
